If you are a pastor or leader in the United Methodist Church, read this book. Ostensibly an account of Willimon's experience of episcopacy, it confronts the many challenges facing the UMC: theological, structural and personal.Willimon pulls no punches, and in under 200 pages offers enough to offend nearly everyone. He finds no segment of the church - boards, agencies, laity, clergy, fellow bishops, and even himself - that hasn't been part of the problem. He doesn't care what people think - only that Jesus is happy, that people come to faith in him, and that the church recover a passion for evangelistic faithfulness. After you read this, pastors, get copies for your lay leaders. Lay leaders, if you acquired your own copy, get one for your pastor. Then, which ever direction the book giving goes, sit down and talk about it.
An interesting read, typical of the wit, humor, and candor of a brilliant writer and preacher. But while I recommend it for bishops and conference leadership, it is not written for the general population. It is a bit too focused on the idea of unleashing the authority of bishops as an answer to denominational decline. As a Methodist from North Alabama, I was challenged by Willimon's work with us but found the book to be a somewhat biased view of events that occurred during his time with us.
This book could be called the confessions of a Bishop or the background thoughts of a Bishop. Since the UMC Bishops have a fairly powerful position it really gives insights into the process of growth as a minister and where they fall short. It would be a good primer for any potential minister in the UMC or for that matter, beyond the UMC as the issues are in every denomination. Well written and offers a different view of Bishop WIllimon not shared in his Sermons.
You don't have to be United Methodist to appreciate this candid and honest account of being a bishop today. Episcopal and Anglican bishops will particularly find the author's insights and observations about church leadership very helpful. Mainline Protestant churches are in crisis with declining membership and low church morale as well as depleting resources. It takes courage, faith and guts to be willing to lead such an organization today. And thankfully The authors shows us a way forward.
I found this book to be a genuinely honest and painfully real critique of where we find the church today. Bishop Willimon has cut through the facade of how most see the church and how it is supposed to be and dared to show us what we can become with God's help.
This book is not for everyone. It is not even for every church leader. However, for those who enjoy a fun (humble), passionate challenge to creaky, outdated church structures this is worthy of your time and money. Willimon is a great thinker, preacher and (in this case) prophet. No doubt the United Methodists need to hear him but the many of the rest of us do to.
As a new Bishop in the International Ecumenical Catholic Church this book has been very helpful to me as I begin my episcopate. It also gives a wonderful picture of Methodist/Wesleyian spirituality and practice. I recommend to any Chrisitan or person of faith that is in a leadership position in the Church or other faith group. +Jack Isbell, OFC
This book is very a informative, personal, and humorous (at times) look into the functioning of the UMC by a well known author and bishop. This book is definitely passionately and affectionally written. It not only tells us that the system is broken but gives some logical and tried methods of doing something to overcome merry-go-round of bureaucracy within the system.
