I was excited about this book and couldn't wait to get to it. I'm sad to report that by the time I got through 150 pages, I couldn't even force myself to continue on. The "insights" provided by the otherwise well credentialed and respectable authors are no more than broad generalizations about the current state and likely future of technology. The book is written as though their target reader lacks even a cursory knowledge of the topics they are reviewing, leaving little time for the exploration of fine details that the authors, no doubt, could have written compellingly on. Instead, we're left with something that reads more like an overly-long undergraduate paper, wherein high-mindedness is eschewed in favor of covering as many topics as possible. I skimmed through the remaining pages, hoping to find something worth giving a more detailed read, but found much more of the same throughout the rest of the book. Therefore, I have to rate this as something not worth reading, and that really saddens me as I was expecting so much from this book and these authors.

I looked forward to this book for a couple of weeks while I finished reading a few books I had committed to read first. When I finally got around to The New Digital Age, I found I was quite disappointed. There were very few new insights from what I've been reading for years now and this book could easily have been much shorter. There was what I consider to be a lot of "statements of the obvious." For example: "Everyone will benefit from connectivity, but not equally, and how those difference manifest themselves in the daily lives of people is our focus here." Well, that has been a topic for years now. And the authors went on to give their view, which did not add anything new to what has been in the press for many months/years.Of course, security came up. Again nothing particularly new or insightful. And there was much discussion about who Schmidt visited on his trip to China and other countries. I found that somewhat interesting but again, it wasn't particularly insightful.I admit that I am a true Geek and spend a great deal of time reading, listening to and watching podcasts of all things that have to do with digital technology. So I'm perhaps being a bit too hard on this book in that respect. Also, I admit to being very "Google centric." I "love Google" at least for the time being. So I was perhaps setting a very high standard for this read from the much admired chairman of Google. If you are not one who follows technology as a major part of your life then you will perhaps find this book useful and entertaining. If, like me, technology is part of your life and you live with it and the news it generates every day, you will likely find nothing new here.

What you get in this book is a glimpse of a lot of issues connected with the digital age from Eric Schmidt, who was CEO of Google from 2001 to 2001 (and is now chairman), and Jared Cohen, who currently works for Google but previously was employed as an adviser to Hillary Clinton at the US Department of State. Most of the book, as the title suggests, is about the impact of digital technologies on domestic and international politics. Cohen was probably the main source of ideas on politics while Schmidt contributed ideas about the direction and impact of new technologies. Since I read Evgeny Morozov's book The Net Delusion, in which Jared Cohen's ideas are subjected to rather harsh criticism, I was expecting to disagree with what this book had to say about the impact of digital technologies on world affairs. But I guess Cohen also read Morozov's book because he seems to have anticipated objections to the general optimism of earlier works on the impact of information technologies. So what you get is a basically positive view of that impact of information technologies with provisos and qualifications, most of which are reasonable. Still there are some passages that read like gee-whiz advertising copy and the book ends with the following two sentences: "We cannot eliminate inequality or abuse of power, but through technological inclusion we can help transfer power into the hands of individual people and trust that they will take it from there. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it."

This book is not so much about the New Digital Age as it is recounting recent history. Schmidt and Cohen point out that this book arose out of their visits to Iraq and Afghanistan. That experience and recent nightly news reports dominate the content and direction of this book. In short, the idea is 'everything changes' but in ways you already have heard about. I purchased this book thinking that I would get opinion, ideas and insight from two people who are at the center of the digital world. I have heard Schmidt speak and he is not sharing his thoughts or impressions in this book. Instead, it seems like he has led his name to the book and its really a Jared Cohen book. The table of contents tells it all:Chapter 1: Our future selvesChapter 2: The future of Identify, Citizenship and ReportingChapter 3: The future of statesChapter 4: The future of revolutionChapter 5: The future of terrorismChapter 6: The future of conflict, combat and interventionChapter 7: The future of reconstructionThe future in each of these chapters is simple, we are all connected, we all have information, we are all independent yet we face off against powerful and interventionist forces in nation states creating a struggle with no specific outcome or end.Really, this could have been a book that defined the digital age -- as indicated in the title -- instead it rehashes things most people already know about without getting behind the drivers, consequences and potential futures. No case studies, few examples, ample assertions and statements that seek to create FUD rather than solve problems. Not worth your time, regrettably, as the authors pedigree leads you to expect more.
